Outdoor Smoking Shelters and Cabins Built for Indian Weather
An outdoor smoking shelter is a dedicated structure that gives smokers a protected place to go outside the main building, away from entrances, walkways and windows. SmokinMe outdoor smoking cabins go a step further than a roof and a bench. They enclose the user, filter the smoke and odour inside the unit, and keep the surrounding open area clean, through 45°C summers and heavy monsoon rain. Why the “just smoke outside” policy keeps failing
Most companies send smokers outdoors and consider the problem solved. Then the complaints start. Picture a typical campus in Noida in July. It’s pouring. The informal smoking spot is a patch of paving next to the cafeteria, so everyone crowds under the cafeteria awning instead. Smoke rolls straight in through the door every time someone walks out with a tray. By September the same group has migrated to the basement parking ramp because it’s dry, and now the smoke is going up the lift shaft. Or take a factory in Manesar. The designated area is a painted rectangle on the ground near the loading bay. In May it’s 46°C in the sun. Nobody stands there. They smoke in the shade of the scrap storage shed, which is exactly where you don’t want a lit cigarette. These aren’t discipline problems. They’re design problems. If the official smoking area is uncomfortable, people will find a comfortable one, and you won’t like where it is.Shelter or cabin: which one do you actually need?
This is the first decision, and it’s worth getting right.| Factors | Open smoking shelter | Enclosed outdoor smoking cabin |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Roof plus two or three sides | Fully enclosed unit with door |
| Weather protection | Rain from above, partial wind | Full rain, wind and dust protection |
| Smoke control | Smoke drifts out on the wind | Smoke captured and filtered inside |
| Odour around the area | Noticeable | Contained |
| Comfort in Indian summer | Shade only | Conditioned air inside |
| Best for | Large open sites far from buildings | Sites where the area sits near people, doors or air intakes |
How SmokinMe outdoor smoking cabins work
Our outdoor units are manufactured for open and semi-open areas. The smoke is captured at the source inside the cabin, passed through filtration, and the cleaned air is recirculated. Smoke and odour stay inside the unit rather than spreading across the area around it. A few points buyers ask about:- No ducting or external exhaust. The cabin is plug-and-play. You need a level base and a power connection.
- Fire-safe construction. Cabins use fire-safe materials, and the enclosed design keeps ash and butts in one managed place instead of on the lawn.
- Low energy draw. The system is built to run all day without a heavy load on your power supply.
- Weather protection. Users stay out of the rain and the dust, which is the main reason people actually use the designated area.
Outdoor smoking area design: getting the location right
The best shelter in the wrong place still fails. When we assess a site, these are the questions that decide where a unit goes. How far should a smoking area be from the building entrance?
Keep it away from entrances, exits, windows and fresh-air intakes. In India, designated smoking areas at hotels, restaurants and airports must not be set up at the entrance or exit. Beyond the legal minimum, think about where people walk. If staff or guests have to pass through the smoking area to reach the door, you’ve put it in the wrong spot.Where is the wind coming from?
Prevailing wind decides where smoke goes from an open shelter. An enclosed cabin removes most of this risk, which is one reason it suits tighter sites. Will people actually walk there?
Distance matters, but so does the route. A unit 40 metres away across an unshaded car park in May won’t get used. A unit 15 metres away along a covered path will. The aim is a place that is far enough from the building to protect it, and close enough that smokers choose it over the nearest corner. What’s underneath it?
Rooftop and terrace installations need a check on structural load, waterproofing and wind exposure. Ground-level units need a level, drained base so monsoon water doesn’t pool at the door.Is it visible?
A designated smoking zone works best when it’s obvious. Clear signage and a visible structure stop the “I didn’t know where to go” excuse.Where outdoor smoking zones work best
Corporate campuses and IT parks. Shared green areas, cafeterias and parking zones make an ad-hoc smoking spot almost inevitable. A defined outdoor cabin gives you somewhere to point people. Factories and industrial sites. Fire risk is the big concern here. An enclosed cabin keeps lit material in one place, away from storage, fuel and loading areas. Hotel terraces and restaurant outdoor areas. Guests want a comfortable place to smoke that doesn’t push smoke onto other diners. Airports, railway stations and bus terminals. High footfall needs a durable, easy-to-clean unit that copes with constant use. Malls and campuses. Large open grounds and multiple entrances mean several smaller zones often work better than one big one.Rain, heat and dust: why imported shelters struggle here
Much of the published advice on smoking shelters is written for Europe and North America. It talks about snow load and winter heaters. That’s not our problem. In India, the design pressures are different:- Monsoon. Driving rain from the side, not just from above. A three-sided shelter facing the wrong way is useless for three months a year.
- Heat. An enclosed box in direct sun can become unbearable fast. Conditioning inside the cabin is what makes enclosure practical.
- Dust. Filters load up faster in dusty conditions, so service intervals and filter access need to suit Indian sites.
What does an outdoor smoking shelter cost?
Cost depends on the type (open shelter or enclosed cabin), the number of people using it at once, the site work needed for the base or rooftop, and add-ons such as integrated vending. A simple shelter and a filtered enclosed cabin are very different investments. We provide a written quote after a site assessment, with the specification listed clearly so you can compare like for like.Pair it with vending
Many sites add a vending kiosk next to the outdoor zone for drinks, snacks and essentials. It keeps people on site during breaks and turns a bare corner into a small amenity. If your space is indoors rather than outdoors, see our indoor smoking units. For larger, high-traffic spaces, look at our smoking lounges and rooms. You can compare the whole range on our products page.Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a smoking shelter and a smoking cabin?
A smoking shelter is usually open on one or more sides and mainly protects users from the weather. A smoking cabin is fully enclosed and filters the smoke inside the unit, so the area around it stays cleaner. Can an outdoor smoking cabin be installed on a rooftop or terrace?
Often, yes. Rooftop installations need a check on structural capacity, waterproofing, wind exposure and safe access before anything is placed. We include this in the site assessment.Do outdoor smoking cabins work during the monsoon?
Enclosed cabins protect users from side-driven rain as well as rain from above, which is where most open shelters fall short. A drained, level base prevents water collecting at the entrance. How many outdoor smoking zones does a large campus need?
It depends on headcount, building layout and walking distances. Several smaller zones placed close to where people work usually get more use than one large zone at the edge of the site.Is a designated smoking area required by law?
Indian rules allow designated smoking areas at airports, at hotels with 30 or more rooms and at restaurants seating 30 or more, with conditions on location, signage and use. Other premises have different obligations. We recommend confirming your site’s position with your compliance team before installation.Plan your outdoor smoking zone
